Langhorne Creek’s hero varieties have long been the classic reds, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, both as soloists and in the famous Australian red blend of the two.
Cabernet Sauvignon is justly renowned, medium to full bodied in style, aromatic and fruit driven with blackcurrant, liquorice and dark choc-mint flavours, integrated tannins and persistent length, generous, soft and immediately drinkable while proven to be most cellar-worthy. Many have been awarded top-tier trophies in national shows.
Shiraz tends towards a fuller-bodied style, still with expressive aromas, blackberry and plum flavours with spice notes. And Malbec is one of the region’s special treats, both in single varietal forms and bringing a unique regional impact to blends with the two senior reds.
While Langhorne Creek has a well-documented record with these traditional champions, the region has been a progressive incubator for newer varieties originating out of southern European and Mediterranean countries and eminently suited to our own climatic conditions. Look out for white wines such as Fiano, Vermentino and Pecorino as well as the historic Verdelho, and reds Montepulciano, Tempranillo, Lagrein, Dolcetto and Nero d’Avola.
Many of our region’s winemakers are now releasing these exciting new Australian styles in their own portfolios, while producers based outside the district have recognised the quality of Langhorne Creek’s alternative varieties and are including them in their own programs.
